IN FRONT OF THE VENUE, NOBODY WAS THERE!

Storytelling by Bonny B

You know how much I love telling true stories—stories that I have actually lived through. I deeply love my profession, I love people, I love nature and, above all, I love sharing my professional, human and sometimes philosophical experiences with you.

Today, I want to tell you a story that happened to me more than 20 years ago.

During a concert in Fribourg, while I was taking a break between two sets, two men approached me. They were clearly delighted with the evening and asked whether we would be available to perform at their event venue in Grenchen, in the German-speaking part of Switzerland.

We talked, found a suitable date and signed a proper contract between both parties.

Everything seemed perfectly in order.

Three months before the concert, I even called them again to make sure everything was still going according to plan. No problem: the concert was confirmed.

When the day finally arrived, I hit the road with my four musicians. After almost two hours of driving, we arrived on time for the soundcheck. It was around 5:30 p.m. We were hungry, but ready to work and give our concert.

And then…

In front of the venue, nobody was there!

We found ourselves standing in front of a closed restaurant.

I tried calling the person in charge. Once, twice, several times…

No answer. Complete silence.

I told my musicians:

“Let’s wait another 30 minutes, and then we’ll decide what to do.”

In the end, we waited for almost two hours! While we were waiting, I paid for everyone to have something to eat.

But the man never showed up.

And the strangest thing about this story is that, more than 20 years later, I still have no idea what happened to him or why he simply disappeared.

So I took responsibility. I paid my musicians out of my own pocket, apologized to them, and then we got back on the road… without having played a single note.

That experience taught me something important: even when someone seems enthusiastic, sincere and genuinely impressed by your work, and even when a contract has been signed, unfortunately you can still come across someone who does not respect their commitments.

But experiences like this have never stopped me from smiling and continuing to believe in the wonderful people we meet along the way.

In my profession, as in life, there is one thing that really matters to me: mutual respect.

So there you have it—another true story from my life as a musician.

And believe me… after more than 35 years on the blues road, I still have plenty of stories to tell you!
