How Do I Prepare Before a Concert?
Everyone thinks that before a concert you must be stressed or afraid… But that’s not the case for me at all!
After a few thousand concerts, you gain enough experience and confidence. And I’ve been playing with my brother Ice B for almost 32 years! We know each other by heart. We don’t need to rehearse too much because I always like to keep the songs free, allowing us to improvise and follow the energy of the moment.
So, how do I prepare myself mentally before a show?
I stay cool. I drink water, sometimes a Coke or something sweet. I breathe calmly to slow my heart rate down as much as possible. I keep the main structure of the set list in my head and mentally prepare a few ideas, but most of my words come naturally in the moment. I like to tell my stories in a simple, sincere and natural way.
My guiding thread is the audience. I follow their energy, feel the vibrations of the moment and, while following my set list, I let myself ride the wave… without sinking!
Sometimes I also say a little prayer or meditate before going on stage.
I always take a good look at the stage before the concert. The visual aspect is very important to me: knowing where the cables and equipment are, where the musicians are positioned, and whether the audience is close to the stage or farther away. It helps me feel completely comfortable.
But before all of that, the soundcheck is essential. I want the technicians to feel comfortable too and to enjoy giving us great sound and beautiful lighting. A concert is teamwork!
Before a concert, I never eat very much, but I try to drink plenty of water. And going to the bathroom just before stepping onto the stage… that’s very important too!
That’s my experience. But everyone has their own way of preparing. Every person is unique and should simply find what makes them feel their best before stepping onto the stage.
