Combien d’instruments je joue ?

 

 

J’ai toujours rêvé de jouer de la guitare. Mais comme je suis un rescapé de la guerre des Khmers rouges, j’ai reçu un éclat d’obus qui a paralysé ma main droite dans les années 70, pendant notre fuite dans la jungle.

 

En arrivant en Suisse, je voyais des musiciens avec leurs instruments, et l’instrument le plus incroyable pour moi à cette époque était la guitare. J’ai essayé d’en jouer, mais je n’y arrivais pas à cause de ma main. Alors j’ai choisi l’harmonica.

 

Avant l’harmonica, mon père m’avait offert une flûte de pan. J’ai essayé d’en jouer, mais cela me donnait tellement mal à la tête que j’ai arrêté. Ensuite, je me suis mis à imiter les voix de James Brown, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder et Michael Jackson, et j’ai découvert que je chantais assez juste. J’ai alors commencé à développer ma voix en parallèle avec l’harmonica.

 

J’ai découvert le piano et la batterie lorsque j’ai ouvert mon école de musique en 1992. Pour accompagner mes élèves, je me suis acheté un piano afin de jouer quelques accords. Et grâce à mes élèves, en les accompagnant environ 10 heures par jour, j’apprenais en même temps pour moi.

 

Pour la batterie, c’était la même chose : en enseignant le rythme, j’apprenais à jouer en même temps que mes élèves.

 

Vers l’an 2000, j’ai découvert la cigar box guitar. Mais je trouvais que trois cordes étaient trop compliquées à cause de ma main droite. Alors j’ai décidé de n’en mettre qu’une seule. C’est devenu un style unique : avec ma main handicapée, j’utilise un bottleneck, et j’ai même enregistré plus de trois albums avec cet instrument.

 

Ensuite, je me suis aussi mis à jouer de la guimbarde et du kazoo.

 

Voilà, je pense avoir fait le tour de mes découvertes instrumentales.

 

Aujourd’hui, lors de mes concerts, je chante, je joue de l’harmonica et je fais des percussions avec mes deux pieds. Je suis accompagné de Ice B à la guitare, et parfois je ressors mon orgue pour jouer des morceaux en mineur, ainsi que ma cigar box guitar pour certains morceaux plus profonds.

How many instruments do I play?

 

 

I always dreamed of playing the guitar. But as a survivor of the Khmer Rouge war, I was hit by a shell fragment that paralyzed my right hand in the 1970s while we were fleeing through the jungle.

 

When I arrived in Switzerland, I saw musicians with their instruments, and the most incredible instrument to me at that time was the guitar. I tried to play it, but I couldn’t because of my hand. So I chose the harmonica.

 

Before the harmonica, my father gave me a pan flute as a gift. I tried to play it, but it gave me such strong headaches that I had to stop. Later, I began imitating the voices of James Brown, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, and I discovered that I could sing quite accurately. I then started developing my voice alongside the harmonica.

 

I discovered the piano and drums when I opened my music school in 1992. To accompany my students, I bought a piano to play a few chords. By accompanying my students for about 10 hours a day, I was learning at the same time myself.

 

It was the same with the drums: by teaching rhythm, I was learning to play drums along with my students.

 

Around the year 2000, I discovered the cigar box guitar. But three strings were too difficult because of my right hand. So I decided to keep only one string. It became a unique style: with my disabled hand I use a bottleneck slide, and I have recorded more than three albums with this instrument.

 

Later I also started playing the jaw harp and the kazoo.

 

So I think that covers most of my instrument discoveries.

 

Today, during my concerts, I sing, play harmonica and perform percussion with my two feet. I am accompanied by Ice B on guitar, and sometimes I also bring out my organ to play minor blues pieces, as well as my cigar box guitar for some deeper songs.

Wie viele Instrumente spiele ich?

 

 

Ich habe immer davon geträumt, Gitarre zu spielen. Aber da ich ein Überlebender des Krieges der Roten Khmer bin, wurde meine rechte Hand in den 1970er Jahren durch einen Granatsplitter gelähmt, während wir durch den Dschungel flohen.

 

Als ich in der Schweiz ankam, sah ich Musiker mit ihren Instrumenten, und das faszinierendste Instrument für mich war damals die Gitarre. Ich versuchte sie zu spielen, aber wegen meiner Hand gelang es mir nicht. Also entschied ich mich für die Mundharmonika.

 

Vor der Mundharmonika schenkte mir mein Vater eine Panflöte. Ich versuchte sie zu spielen, aber sie verursachte mir so starke Kopfschmerzen, dass ich damit aufhörte. Danach begann ich, die Stimmen von James Brown, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder und Michael Jackson zu imitieren, und ich stellte fest, dass ich ziemlich gut singen konnte. So begann ich, meine Stimme parallel zur Mundharmonika zu entwickeln.

 

Das Klavier und das Schlagzeug entdeckte ich, als ich 1992 meine Musikschule eröffnete. Um meine Schüler zu begleiten, kaufte ich mir ein Klavier, um ein paar Akkorde spielen zu können. Indem ich meine Schüler etwa 10 Stunden am Tag begleitete, lernte ich gleichzeitig selbst.

 

Beim Schlagzeug war es ähnlich: Während ich Rhythmus unterrichtete, lernte ich gleichzeitig Schlagzeug zu spielen.

 

Um das Jahr 2000 entdeckte ich die Cigar Box Guitar. Aber drei Saiten waren wegen meiner rechten Hand zu schwierig. Deshalb entschied ich mich, nur eine Saite zu verwenden. Daraus entstand ein einzigartiger Stil: Mit meiner behinderten Hand benutze ich einen Bottleneck, und ich habe sogar mehr als drei Alben mit diesem Instrument aufgenommen.

 

Später begann ich auch Maultrommel und Kazoo zu spielen.

 

Ich denke, das sind die meisten Instrumente, die ich im Laufe meiner musikalischen Reise entdeckt habe.

 

Heute singe ich bei meinen Konzerten, spiele Mundharmonika und mache Percussion mit beiden Füßen. Ich werde von Ice B an der Gitarre begleitet, und manchmal spiele ich auch meine Orgel für Bluesstücke in Moll sowie meine Cigar Box Guitar für tiefere Songs.
